College of Education and Human Development
with Continuing & Extended Education at
Bowling Green State University
presents the
Autism Certificate Program

The Autism certificate is interdisciplinary and will provide skills and understanding identifying and programming for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The purpose of the certificate program is to offer professional development opportunities for educators (general and special), school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, rehabilitation counselors, medical personnel, and educational consultants, who want to support the growth, development, and learning of students with ASD.

The certificate is a 15-credit hour program which includes the following:

  1. Introduction to Autism
This course has been included to provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders. It will address etiology, history, prevalence, characteristics, and service/treatment options, and resources nationally, statewide, and regionally. It will provide the framework for subsequent courses offered through this certification.

  2. Social Skills, Sensory Processing, and Communication/Language Issues

  3. Behaviors: Inappropriate and Repetitive

  4. Assessment, Methods of Instruction, and Materials for Use
These three courses have been included as part of this certificate program because experts in the field agree that the following topical areas constitute challenges and needs among those individuals who are on the Autism Spectrum.

  5. The fifth course for this certificate is a field experience requirement, which would validate those skills obtained by candidates who plan to teach and work with individuals on the Autism Spectrum.
